Since 2006, the Research Institute on Social and Economic Policy (RISEP) at Florida International University has been working with the Florida Wage Theft Task Force (WTTF) to create a database of wage violations collected by community organizations throughout Florida and, wage and hour violations reported by the U.S. Department of Labor throughout the state. The purpose of the database is to document the extent of wage theft, to quantify how much lost wages have been recovered, and to see which industries in Florida are most affected by the problem. The data in this report highlights wage theft cases reported to the Wage and Hour Division of the Florida office of the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) in Alachua County and wage theft stories collected by the Alachua County Wage Theft Task Force and shared with RISEP. The data in this report is limited to only the cases reported to the DOL agency and to the Alachua County Wage Theft Task Force, and does not account for the full magnitude of wage theft cases in Alachua County, as an unknown number of cases are unreported.
